Academics

Apply

IDSS is looking for future researchers and leaders who want to address societal challenges in areas such as finance, urban systems, energy systems, social networks, health care, and beyond, by combining analytical methods from statistics and data science, information and decision systems, with the methodologies of the social sciences.

Doctoral Program in Social and Engineering Systems (SES)

Program Profile

At the doctoral level SES prepares researchers to advance the state of knowledge in addressing societal challenges. By becoming accomplished researchers within the IDSS analytical disciplines, and grounded in an application domain area, SES graduates will go on to transformative careers in academia, the public sector, and the private sector.

Applicant Profile

Whether your most recent experience has been an undergraduate or master’s program, or in industry, if you can demonstrate (a) academic excellence in a relevant area (engineering or applied mathematics, or social science) from a strong program, (b) motivation to solve concrete and complex societal problems with technological aspects, and (c) an interest in fundamental research on complex systems, we encourage you to apply.

Apply

SES’s application opens September 15 and is due December 15.

Master of Science in Technology and Policy

Program Profile

The Technology and Policy Program (TPP) addresses societal challenges through graduate research and education at the intersection of technology and policy. Our goal is to mobilize those with science and engineering expertise to be able to inform intelligent, responsible strategies and policies that benefit communities from local to global. At the master’s level, TPP prepares leaders in research and practice who can confront both the technical and social challenges grounded in the crucial technological dimensions of modern society, combined with a deep understanding of how institutions, interests, and preferences shape policies. The TPP Master’s program is also excellent preparation for further research at the doctoral level in the field of technology and policy.

Applicant Profile

TPP seeks students who can combine excellence in a particular area of science and engineering (communications, energy, environment, computers, aerospace, etc.) with rigorous applied social science (economics, politics, law, etc.). We seek leaders who can be effective in motivating concern about issues, catalyzing coalitions to effect change, managing implementation of new policies, and advancing understanding of technology-policy interactions.

Apply

TPP’s application opens September 15 and is due December 15.
